So, why do we stay longer than we need to? This week let's get straight into it shall we?

Your Gut Already Knows.

You don't need another screenshot sent to your best friend.
You don't need another late-night spiral analysing a text.
You don't need another conversation convincing yourself that this time will be different.

Because if you're really honest...Your gut already knows.

It knows the difference between someone who's busy and someone who's avoiding.
It knows the difference between someone who makes a mistake and someone who repeatedly avoids repair.
It knows the difference between humility and ego.

It knows the difference between feeling loved...and spending your life hoping to feel loved.

So why do so many of us spend months— sometimes years —explaining away behaviour our intuition recognised long ago?

Not because we're naive. Not because we're weak.

Because our minds are remarkably good at protecting us from painful truths.

From an evolutionary perspective, our brains are wired to preserve important relationships. For most of human history, belonging increased our chances of survival. Losing connection carried a cost or is even considered a failure in some cultures. So when a relationship feels threatened, your brain doesn't always ask, "Is this healthy?"

Sometimes it asks, "How do I keep this together?"

Even if it means leaving yourself behind.

The Inner Critic (NON RENT PAYING OBNOXIOUS ROOMIE) Doesn't Always Criticize.

Sometimes...It negotiates. It whispers,

"He's just stressed."
"She's had a hard childhood."
"Maybe you're expecting too much."
"Relationships are hard."
"Nobody's perfect."
"Just give it a little more time."
"Don't overreact."
"At least they're trying."

The inner critic doesn't always attack you.

Sometimes it protects you from the possibility that the relationship you're fighting so hard to save isn't giving you what you need.

So instead of asking, "Is this relationship healthy?" it asks, "How can I explain this away?"

And before long...You're no longer listening to your intuition.

You're negotiating against it.

If you (this isn’t gender specific) are justifying, negotiating, hoping, reacting, fighting, crying, playing small, protecting, still staying....

Where Are You in All of This?

Sometimes the biggest red flag isn't what they did. It's how quickly we make it okay.

Maybe they don't seem bothered that you're hurting. They don't care that you're left without answers. They aren't curious enough to learn your love language, yet expect you to understand theirs. They offload stress, anger, negativity, frustration or disappointment onto you but rarely return to repair the damage.

Conversations about money, shared goals, financial transparency or the practical things that create emotional safety are avoided and only fear, burden is dumped.

Intimacy slowly disappears — not because life gets busy for a season, but because closeness itself is continually avoided.

When you raise something that matters...

Ego arrives before humility.
Defensiveness arrives before curiosity.
Being right matters more than making things right.
Growth becomes your responsibility.
The relationship becomes your project.

Relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman has spent decades studying couples and found that healthy relationships aren't defined by the absence of conflict. They're defined by repair.

Repair is caring that your partner is hurting.
Repair is taking responsibility.

Why Do We Stay?

This isn't a question of blame. It's a question of understanding.

Psychologists have long observed that our earliest relationships shape what feels normal. The emotional patterns we experience growing up often become the blueprint our nervous system recognises as love.

If affection had to be earned...
If one caregiver carried the emotional load while the other stayed emotionally unavailable...
If conflict was avoided instead of repaired...
If love felt unpredictable...

Then unpredictability can feel strangely familiar. Not because it's healthy. Because it's known.

Your nervous system doesn't automatically recognise what's safe.

It first recognises what it's experienced before. Which means sometimes you're not choosing the healthiest relationship...

You're choosing the most familiar feeling. That's why awareness changes everything.

Because once you notice the pattern...You finally have the power to interrupt it.

The Self-Worth Muscle

The question isn't, "Why are they like this?"
It's, "Where am I in all of this?"

Where did your needs stop mattering?

Where did your boundaries become optional?

Where did your peace become less important than preserving the relationship?

Self-worth isn't believing you're perfect. It's believing your needs matter. It's believing you deserve honesty.

Respect. Repair. Transparency. Curiosity. Emotional safety. Mutual effort.

It's believing that love isn't measured by how much you're willing to tolerate, it's measured by how safe both people feel to grow.

Perhaps the greatest betrayal isn't always someone else's behaviour.

Sometimes...It's how often we abandon ourselves to keep someone else comfortable.

Every time your inner critic negotiates against your intuition...Your self-worth muscle weakens.
